Critical Barrier Containment for Modern Mining
When reviewing the development of a mine or the continued operation of an existing mining facility, attention is often focused on the extraction process, production targets, and commodity prices. However, behind every successful mining operation lies a network of critical systems and infrastructure that enable safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible operations.
Among these are engineered barrier systems, which play a
fundamental role in the containment, protection, and management of materials
throughout the mining process.
AKS Lining Systems (Pty) Ltd has established itself as a trusted manufacturer and supplier of these critical barrier solutions to the mining industry. Through decades of experience and technical expertise, the company understands that effective containment is about far more than simply installing a liner. It is about safeguarding assets, protecting the environment, ensuring regulatory compliance, and supporting the long-term sustainability of mining operations.
At the heart of AKS Lining Systems' philosophy for Mining
Applications are three fundamental objectives:
·
Containing high-value liquids
·
Protecting high-value assets
·
Protecting the Environment and is so doing Preventing
costly remediation
AKS Lining Systems provides a comprehensive range of geosynthetic barrier solutions designed to meet these demanding requirements. Each product within the range serves a specific purpose, yet all contribute to a common goal: improving operational reliability while reducing environmental and financial risk.
As environmental regulations become increasingly stringent and stakeholders place greater emphasis on sustainable mining practices, the importance of robust containment systems continues to grow. Modern mining operations can no longer view barrier systems as secondary infrastructure; they are essential components that directly influence operational performance, environmental stewardship, and long-term project success.
Containing High-Value Liquids
Modern mining operations depend on the use,
transportation, and containment of a wide range of process liquids. These may
include process water, pregnant leach solutions, tailings slurry, acidic or
alkaline solutions, and other harsh chemical reagents essential to mineral
extraction and processing.
These liquids often represent significant operational value.
In many cases, they contain dissolved minerals, expensive reagents, or process
chemicals that are fundamental to production. Any loss through seepage,
leakage, or containment failure can result in direct financial losses, reduced
operational efficiency, and potential environmental consequences.
Geoliner™ HDPE and LLDPE Geomembranes – smooth
surface or with texturing.
At the heart of many modern, large scale containment
systems lies a High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) or Linear Low-Density Polyethylene
(LLDPE) geomembrane. Recognized globally for their exceptional chemical
resistance, durability, and long-term performance, HDPE and LLDPE geomembranes
have become the industry standard for critical mining containment applications.
Their proven performance has made them the preferred lining
solution for heap leach pads, tailings storage facilities, process ponds,
return water dams, evaporation ponds, and stormwater containment systems. AKS
manufactures these in large scale at their production facility based in Cape
Town – producing up to 2 million square meter per month.
AKS™ Cast-In Concrete Protection Liner
Systems
While the Geoliner™ product range is essential for large (and
small) scale liquid containment, many mining facilities also require long-term
protection of concrete infrastructure exposed to aggressive chemical
environments.
Concrete structures such as process tanks, clarifiers,
thickeners, sumps, bunds, channels, pump stations, and chemical storage
facilities are continually exposed to substances that can degrade conventional
concrete over time. Acidic solutions, process chemicals, abrasion, and
continuous wetting and drying cycles can compromise structural integrity,
leading to costly repairs and operational interruptions.
AKS Lining Systems addresses these challenges through its cast-in Concrete Protection Liner (CPL) systems. Installed during the construction phase, or grouted in place afterwards, the liner becomes permanently anchored into the concrete structure, creating a durable protective barrier between the process environment and the concrete substrate.
Unlike surface coatings that may crack, delaminate, or require frequent maintenance, HDPE or Polypropylene (PP) cast-in protection liners become an integral part of the structure itself. This provides long-term resistance to chemical attack, mechanical wear, and corrosion, significantly extending the service life of critical infrastructure.
Successful containment and barrier systems require more
than individual products and should unitize engineered solutions that work
together to protect valuable resources, infrastructure, and the surrounding
environment throughout the life of the mine. Reach out to the AKS Lining
