Crushing & Screening 101: Part 1 - Choosing the Right Crushing Principle
In this first part of our Crushing & Screening 101 series, launched by GURSAN for industry professionals, we analyze the two main crushing mechanisms that directly determine your plant's operating life and spare parts budget.
1. Crushing by Impact Principle: The Power of Speed and Kinetic Energy. In this principle, the crushing process begins when the blow bars on a high-speed rotating rotor strike the material directly. With the kinetic energy gained, the material is flung against the fixed aprons on the crusher body and shatters upon impact. In addition, the rock-on-rock collision further supports the self-crushing process.
- Suitable Materials: Rocks with low abrasiveness (containing 0-2% silica) and medium-to-low hardness, such as limestone, gypsum, dolomite, marble, and limestone derivatives.
- Key Advantages: Since the impact principle breaks the material along its natural grain lines, it offers an exceptionally high cubical product ratio. The rate of flaky material is minimal, which means a perfect aggregate for concrete and asphalt standards. Furthermore, the reduction ratio within a single machine is very high.
2. Crushing by Compression Principle: Mechanical Force and Durability. In this principle, the crushing process occurs by applying a mechanical pressure high enough to exceed the boundary strength of the material between two surfaces, one fixed and one moving. The material is squeezed between these two surfaces, loses its internal bonds, and crumbles.
- Suitable Materials: Highly hard and extremely abrasive rocks with high silica content (5% and above), such as granite, basalt, quartzite, gabbro, and river gravel.
- Key Advantages: If you try to crush high-silica material using the impact principle, your rotor blow bars will melt away within days. Because the compression principle keeps friction and impact shocks to a minimum, it maximizes part lifetime in abrasive materials. It reduces downtime and ensures continuous, high-tonnage production safety.

In summary, hardness alone is not a criterion. Knowing the "abrasiveness" (silica) ratio of your material saves you from thousands of dollars in spare parts costs.
