Industrial cleaning often involves a trade-off. Maintenance teams need to remove grease, carbon, coatings and compacted residue effectively, but conventional methods can introduce water, chemicals, abrasive media and additional clean-up. The IBL 3000 Dry Ice Blaster provides another option for industrial maintenance applications, particularly where access to machinery is limited and reducing secondary waste is important.

Dry ice blasting uses compressed air to propel solid CO₂ pellets at the contaminated surface. The impact and rapid cooling help loosen the unwanted material, while the dry ice sublimates directly from a solid into a gas.

Because the blasting medium does not remain behind, there is no spent abrasive media or process water to collect afterwards. For mines, workshops and processing plants, this can simplify cleaning jobs where equipment access and maintenance time are already a challenge.

Built for Restricted Working Areas

One of the more practical features of the IBL 3000 is its narrow design.

The machine measures 400 mm wide, 1,110 mm high and 780 mm long. At only 400 mm across, it can be moved through narrow spaces and positioned closer to machinery in congested plant and workshop environments.

This can be particularly useful where installed equipment, pipework or other infrastructure makes it difficult to position a conventional blasting machine close to the cleaning point.

Despite its narrow footprint, the IBL 3000 weighs 80 kg and has a dry ice hopper with a capacity of more than 25 kg. For most applications, this provides more than 30 minutes of blasting before the hopper needs to be refilled.

The hopper is fixed rather than removable for emptying but can be dismantled in less than 10 minutes when access is required for servicing.

Designed for Industrial Use

The layout of the IBL 3000 has also been kept relatively simple.

Components are positioned behind the rear handles rather than protruding from the machine, helping to protect them from accidental knocks as the unit is moved around a plant or workshop.

The IBL 3000 uses a single-hose system with 1-inch airflow through the components and is fitted with FESTO components. A 7 m blasting hose is supplied with the machine.

The standard short nozzle is supplied with 6 mm, 8 mm and 10 mm inserts. This gives the operator different nozzle options depending on the application and available compressed-air supply.

Unlike the larger IBL 4000, remote adjustment of dry ice flow and blasting pressure from the gun is not standard on the IBL 3000. This functionality is available as an optional extra.

Less Secondary Waste

One of the main reasons for using dry ice blasting is what it doesn't leave behind.

Abrasive blasting leaves the removed contamination together with spent blasting media. Wet cleaning introduces water and depending on the process, detergents or other chemicals. With dry ice blasting, the pellets sublimate during cleaning, leaving mainly the material removed from the equipment.

Depending on the component and the approved cleaning procedure, dry ice blasting may also allow some equipment to be cleaned with less dismantling. This can reduce the amount of work required before and after cleaning and help maintenance teams return equipment to service sooner.

The application still needs to be assessed correctly. The substrate, type of contamination, compressed-air supply, nozzle configuration and operator technique will all affect the cleaning result.

Ventilation is also important. Dry ice becomes CO₂ gas as it sublimates, so suitable ventilation and site-specific safety controls are required, particularly when work is carried out in confined or poorly ventilated areas. Appropriate PPE should also form part of the work procedure.
