MASPRO Redesign Extends Rotation Head Service Life by 154%
A component
can meet its original design intent and still underperform once real operating
conditions expose weaknesses in how the assembly behaves under load.
MASPRO
encountered this issue on a high-utilisation surface blast-hole drilling fleet,
where rotation heads were reaching the end of their service life earlier than
expected despite standard maintenance practices. The recurring failures were
increasing maintenance requirements, affecting drill availability and driving
higher component replacement costs.
Engineering
analysis identified axial movement within the gear-to-spindle interface. The
resulting load behaviour was contributing to internal stress and premature
fatigue within the rotation head assembly.
MASPRO's response focused on addressing the load path rather than simply
reinforcing the component. The redesign introduced a spindle with dual adaptors
and circlip integration to stabilise the gear interface, reduce axial movement
and improve load distribution across the assembly. The upgraded rotation head
was installed during scheduled maintenance and monitored through subsequent
service.
The measured
results included a 154% increase in rotation head service life, with up to
11,000 operating hours achieved. The case also recorded an 89% reduction in annual
component expenditure, fewer maintenance interventions and improved scheduled
availability across the fleet.
Original
specification provides a design starting point. Field performance provides
evidence of how the component actually behaves in the application. Where that
evidence shows load behaviour, fatigue or component interaction producing a
repeatable issue, application-driven engineering can bring the component
performance into better alignment with the real duty cycle.
Engineering Beyond the Original
Specification
MASPRO is an
Australian-owned engineering and manufacturing company specialising in
precision-engineered aftermarket components for underground and surface
hard-rock mining equipment.
Beyond
Original Specification reflects MASPRO's approach to application-driven
engineering. Where field performance reveals that a component or assembly is
not achieving the required reliability under its actual duty cycle, MASPRO
investigates the failure mechanism and identifies opportunities to improve
performance through engineering.
MASPRO will
bring this application-driven engineering approach to Electra Mining Africa
2026, where the team will discuss how field performance and failure analysis
can inform reliability improvements across underground and surface mining
applications.
Visitors can
meet MASPRO in Hall 3, Australian Pavilion, Stand D15-B.
