Why Lead-Acid Still Rules Underground: The Safety Case, and the Circle That Closes
Underground, a battery is not a component — it is the reason the machine is allowed to exist.
Underground, the safety case is the specification. Lead-acid's failure modes are slow, visible and manageable with ventilation discipline — a century of mining practice is built around them. Newer chemistries bring energy density, and also bring thermal-event risk into a place where air is rationed. Where a mine weighs that trade, Microtex makes the engineering case openly, duty by duty — the company builds vented lead-acid increased-safety traction packs precisely because that is the argument it believes wins underground.

There is a second argument, and it closes a circle. In organised recycling systems, recovery rates for lead-acid batteries are routinely reported around 99 percent — by many accounts the most successfully recycled manufactured product in the world. The lead in a new battery has usually lived several lives already. For a mine, this has a practical edge: a retired pack is not waste but metal with a market price, and the scrap credit belongs in any honest total-cost comparison between chemistries.
