Driving Professional Standards and Innovation in the Lifting Industry

From 9–10 September 2026, The Lifting Equipment Engineering Association of SA (LEEASA) will host its Annual National Conference at Electra Mining Africa, bringing together international thought leaders, government representatives, regulators, employers and technical specialists to discuss the future of South Africa's lifting industry. At a time when industries across the country are facing increasing demands around safety, compliance, skills development and operational excellence, the conference will provide a platform for collaboration, knowledge sharing and industry advancement, while placing renewed focus on one of LEEASA’s most significant initiatives; the development of a formal occupational qualification for Lifting Machinery Inspectors (LMIs). 

Industry estimates indicate that the current pool of qualified and active Lifting Machinery Inspectors is substantially below the capacity that South Africa will require over the next five to ten years. With major industries such as mining, construction, logistics, manufacturing and infrastructure increasingly reliant on safe and compliant lifting operations, the shortage of inspection professionals presents a growing challenge. Without a structured pathway to develop the next generation of inspectors, the industry risks facing a critical skills gap that could affect safety, compliance, productivity and the sustainability of future growth.

Recognising the significance of this challenge, LEEASA has taken a leading role in driving the development of a nationally recognised occupational qualification for Lifting Machinery Inspectors. Working closely with government, regulatory authorities, industry bodies, technical experts, training providers and other key stakeholders, LEEASA is helping to establish a sustainable pipeline of competent inspectors while strengthening professional standards across the lifting industry. The qualification represents an investment not only in skills development, but in the future safety, reliability, productivity and competitiveness of South African industry. 

Against this backdrop, the LEEASA National Conference will provide a platform for industry, government and technical stakeholders to engage on the challenges and opportunities facing the sector, while enriching attendees through access to international best practices, regulatory developments, emerging technologies and expert insights shaping the future of lifting safety, compliance and operational excellence.
