Alastair Macfarlane
Qualifications: MSc (Eng), ACSM, FSAIMM
Alastair has worked in the mining industry for 53 years, since graduating from Camborne School of Mines.
He has worked for Anglo American and AngloGold, rising to senior positions of Mine Manager and Consultant Mineral Resource Management.
He has worked as a Senior Lecturer at Wits University, lecturing at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, in Mining Engineering, Mine Planning, Financial Management and MRM. During this time, he developed courses and programmes at all levels.
He has consulted extensively in the South African mining industry, as well as in DRC, Zambia, Tanzania, Zimbabwe and Australia.
He was a co-founder and Director of a successful mining company in the Northern Cape and was a co-founder of the Mandela Mining Precinct.
He has served on the Council of the Association of Mine Managers and has been a President of the Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy.
He has also spent 10 years as an Independent Non-Executive Member of the Board of Implats, where during that time he was the Chair of the Health, Safety, Environmental and Risk Committee.
He is still active in the mining industry, as a shareholder and consultant to Rock Eater (Pty)Ltd.
